What Lies Beneath: A Dark Stalker Romance
Amber Faye & K. A. Pryde
(Game of Obsession Duet, #1)
Publication date: May 31st 2022
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Three men who’d burn the world down for me.
But now one of them wants me to burn with it.

My grandmama used to tell me the women in our family were all cursed. They attracted danger. Not in bits and pieces, but in droves. She was struck by lightning—twice. Mom died in a plane crash. She was crossing the street at the time.

Me?

I attract obsession.

***

The first, in my teenage years, wrote me letters that started as love poems and progressed quickly to bloodstained all-caps rants.

He drove me into the arms of the second: a sociopathic organized crime boss here in sunny LA.

He drove me into the arms of the third. Greyson Cain, who told me the truth about being an undercover cop, but might just be lying about everything else.

It’s time for me to stop running. Patterns don’t end on their own, and luck doesn’t change.

If I want to win this game of obsession, it’s finally time I learned the rules.

Excerpt

I scratched the letter onto paper, as always, with that sweet chemical mixture of fury and amusement that only V can make me feel.

I tried other women. I did, so help me, I truly did. But they weren’t her and they weren’t really even trying to be like her because I didn’t know how to change one person into another person, and who can blame a man for snapping when his nerves are stretched so thin with disappointment like that? So I can’t really blame her, because I didn’t learn either. I tried again and again, but I had to come to the conclusion that it’s only ever going to be her. Vibrant, vivacious Viola.

I almost cut through the paper with my pen tip, writing this letter. I just needed to know—why was she so brazenly with another man when I’d made my intentions so incredibly crystal fucking clear?

“VW,

You’re so clever. Why don’t you understand a pattern when you see one? Three little piggies have already gone to market, so to speak. No—I should scribble that out. That’s awful. I wish I had your way with words.

There’s no prettier way to say this, though: You’re mine. You’ve always been mine. I know you inside and out, and you know that, and you will know me just like that too one day. One day soon.

I have some things to figure out, because a plan this delicate must go perfectly, but then … Viola, sweetheart, love of my life. You know I’m coming, don’t you?

I’ll save you from him. He doesn’t seem quite right, does he?

I’m coming.

-SA :-)”

And she responded by stuffing a piece of paper in her own mailbox, sticking out, exactly where I’d left her letter for her to find. I was surprised—it had been years and years since she’d actually sent me a response.

It said,

“SA,

Good.

-VW”
