Tell us a little of your background.

I am Colombian, but I live in Canada. I’ve been writing since I was 17 years old, but I wasn’t persistent. Recently I decided I am going to write more frequently, in the genres of non-fiction, fiction, and science fiction. Topics of space always fascinated me, like life in other worlds, because I am fond of astronomy. I am an Engineer and I took a short specialization in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Without looking for it, I became an investigator for the UFO phenomenon. I have never liked the speculation, the terror and the nonsense that is said around the subjects of extraterrestrial life. Observing the sky for many years in my hobby of astronomy, in which I have observed many astronomical phenomena, I have also seen UFOs twice. So the subject of visitors from other worlds does not seem far-fetched to me. I have been bullied because of that, but recently I found this topic is being taken seriously and is now being recognized as a genuine phenomenon. Some of my books and scientific research are from my findings about UFOs (details are on my page franciscovillate.com). My fiction and science fiction books have that extraterrestrial component and in them I want to convey information that I now know about the reason the ETs are visiting us, where do we come from and what the future of humanity will be.

Soy colombiano pero vivo actualmente en Canadá. Escribo desde que tenía 17 años de edad, pero no fui constante. Recientemente decidí que voy a escribir con más frecuencia, en los géneros de no-ficción, ficción y ciencia ficción. Me encantan los temas del espacio, vida en otros mundos, debido a que soy aficionado a la Astronomía, soy Ingeniero y tomé una corta especialización en Astronomía y Astrofísica. Sin estalo buscando, me convertí en un investigador del fenómeno OVNI. Nunca me ha gustado la especulación, el terror y las tonterías que se dice alrededor de los temas de vida extraterrestre. Al observar el cielo por muchos años en mi hobbie de la astronomía, en los cuales he observado muchos fenómenos astronómicos, he visto en dos ocasiones los OVNIS. Entonces el tema de visitantes de otros mundos no me parece descabellado. Me han hecho matoneo debido a lo que he visto y que ahora sé, pero recientemente veo que el tema se está tomando con seriedad y ahora se reconoce que es un fenómeno real. Los libros de ficción y ciencia ficción tienen ese componente extraterrestre y en ellos quiero transmitir información que ahora sé sobre la razón por la cual ellos nos visitan, de dónde venimos y cuál es el futuro de la humanidad.

What inspired you to start writing?

Share information that I know about life on other worlds, which many people ignore, that is important in the Earth’s future development, to solve the problems we currently have and that we will have. I am also a coach, and I have learned from struggles of extraordinary human beings. Each person is an infinite universe of experiences and I love to write about the relationships between human beings, as a fabric or network of mutual interactions.

What advice would you give a new writer, someone just starting out?

Enjoy writing and enjoy sharing what you know. If it’s not fun, don’t do it. Do not think about becoming a millionaire, because that creates tension and is no longer fun. Writing is an interesting process by which the writer discovers many things about himself. In every character that you create in your novels, there is a part of yourself. Use the writing process as a journey of discovery into an inner world, and share what you see there. Read books from other authors, learn how to create a plot in a novel, and how to create characters that grow during that plot. Let others review what has written and be open to improve your work.

Disfrute escribir y disfrute compartir lo que sabe. Si no es divertido, no lo haga. No piense en volverse millonario, pues eso le crea tensiones y deja de ser divertido. Escribir es un proceso interesante por el cual el autor descubre muchas cosas de sí mismo. En cada personaje que crea en sus novelas hay una parte de sí mismo. Utilice el proceso de escritura como un viaje de descubrimiento hacia su mundo interior, y comparta lo que ve allí. Lea libros de otros escritores, aprenda cómo hacer un plot de una novela y como crear personajes que crecen internamente durante ese plot. Deje que otros revisen lo que ha escrito y esté abierto a hacer cambios para mejorar su obra.

What is the most difficult part about writing for you?

Writing the book takes time. Making several corrections is necessary, but the hardest part is editing the book. Editing costs are high. A professional editor is necessary and expensive.

Escribir el libro toma tiempo. Hacer varias correcciones es necesario, pero lo más difícil es editar el libro. Los costos de edición son altos. Un editor profesional es necesario y costoso.

How do you do research for your books?

I look for scientific information, NASA articles or ask experts. If one writes science fiction, it must be based on science and the latest discoveries. I based my non-fiction books on my scientific research for several years. I requested a peer review from experts to validate my findings.

Busco información científica, artículos de la Nasa o pregunto a expertos. Si uno escribe ciencia ficción, debe estar basado en la ciencia y en los últimos descubrimientos. Mis libros de no-ficción se sustentan en mis investigaciones científicas de varios años. Yo solicito un “peer-review” a expertos para validar los hallazgos.

If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?

Far from Earth, in another world, learning from the culture of its inhabitants and what they have learned from their human existence. As that is not possible for now, the best thing is not looking for the perfect place but the perfect state of consciousness, and for that I have to work on myself, taking care of myself and growing internally.

Lejos de la Tierra, en otro mundo, aprendiendo de la cultura de sus habitantes y lo que han aprendido de la existencia humana. Como eso no se puede por ahora, lo mejor es no busca el sitio perfecto sino el estado de consciencia perfecta, y para eso tengo que trabajar en mí mismo, cuidándome y creciendo internamente.

How do you come up with names for your characters?

I made up names, if they are beings that do not live on Earth. Other characters that if they are terrestrial, I search the Internet for common names according to the region where they live or the language they speak.

Invento muchos nombres, si son seres que no viven en la Tierra. Otros personajes que si son terrestres, busco en Internet nombres comunes según la región donde viven o el idioma que hable.

What inspired you to start writing?

An internal urge, or desire, to enter my subconscious. We have a lot of information internally that we don’t consciously remember. Writing comes out naturally from that inner-self. I have a desire to share what I have discovered. Dreams sometimes inspire the stories I write. I believe that somehow there is a lot of knowledge in the universe, and we always receive information or inspiration in a way that we do not yet understand. We have to breathe deeply, let the mind be in a state of inner peace, and thus the stories reach our conscious mind. We are writers, but the true author is the universe itself that inspires us daily.

Un impulso interno, o deseo de ingresar en mi subconsciente. Uno tiene internamente mucha información que conscientemente no la recuerda. Al escribir sale naturalmente del esa parte interior de uno. Adicionalmente hay un deseo de compartir lo que uno ha descubierto. Los sueños a veces inspiran las historias que escribo. Yo creo que de alguna manera hay mucho conocimiento en el universo, y uno siempre recibe información o inspiración de una manera que aún no la entendemos. Hay que respirar profundamente, dejar que la mente esté en un estado de paz interior, y así las historias llegan a nuestra mente consciente. Somos escritores, pero el verdadero autor es el universo mismo que nos inspira a diario.

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

Feel passion for what you write. Have a sense of urgency to write it down and share it. Follow a good plot structure. Make a good psychological development of the characters, with their limiting beliefs and aspirations. Make the characters grow in wisdom throughout the story. Understand what the main messages of the book are and make sure they are transmitted. A story with a lot of suspense and action but without messages or teachings, it is like a vigorous athlete but without a soul.

Sentir pasión por lo que escribe. Tener el sentido de urgencia de escribirlo y compartirlo. Seguir una buena estructure de un plot. Hacer un buen desarrollo sicológico de los personajes, con sus creencias limitantes y sus aspiraciones. Hacer que los personajes crezcan en sabiduría a lo largo de la historia. Entender cuáles son los mensajes principales de la obra y asegurarse de que sean transmitidos. Una historia con mucho suspenso y acción pero sin mensajes ni enseñanzas, es como un atleta vigoroso pero sin alma.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Always remember you enjoy writing. If not, observe yourself to find out what is missing. Be like a little boy/girl, curious, innocent, and intrepid.
