S. L. Bynum Interview

Tell us a little about yourself and your background? I started writing when I

was 12, and my first novel was supposed to be like a book in the

“Goosebumps” series. It was awful. The books I have out now were written

after a lot of practice. I’m 26, and besides books, I like desserts, playing

games, and dancing to music (mostly when I’m alone). I live in the city of

Greensboro, NC.

Which writers inspire you? J. K. Rowling, because she’s so creative in her

stories and she had setbacks in her career, just like me. Christopher Paolini

and R. A. Salvatore inspire me when I’m writing in my favorite genre,

fantasy.

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers? Not

yet, but maybe in the future!

When did you decide to become a writer? I fell in love with writing when I

did a homework assignment for my brother, when he was in 3rd grade. I had

to write my own rendition of a fairy tale, and I did my own version of The

Three Little Pigs. I fell in love with the ability to create my own characters

and my own world with just my imagination.

I didn’t seriously start thinking of writing as a career until I was 16, and I’ve

been working on that dream diligently since I was 18. Now I have two books

published, and I feel so blessed.

Do you write full-time or part-time? Part-time for now, but I’m working so

hard to do it full-time so I can quit my retail job!

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea

takes you? I start with a very rough outline, sometimes a chapter-by-chapter

one. My book always turns out different from the original outline though, so

I’m surprised at where the story takes me by the end of it.

Do you have a strategy for finding reviewers? I go to Goodreads groups that

read in the genre of the book I need reviewers for. There are also some

websites that have a list of reviewers.

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews? Love ‘em both. It means

people are reading my books.

The good reviews mean I’m doing something right. Most of the time I can

use bad reviews as constructive criticism to make my next book even better.

The bad ones are also just haters sometimes. 🙂
